I'm hearing some are truly pissed and feeling like their kids shouldn't have to sign anything other than a scholarship contract, while some are privately applauding a new way to handle the kids who really escalate the issue of drinking without ever really being punished - particularly the stars. But no one with inside knowledge has posted anything we can learn from yet.
The change in coaching staff several years ago was "traumatic" for a lot of the Tarheel team. The new coach had a more conservative view on how far anyone could go outside the rules. My child was on the team during this change. There was some "backlash" from a few team members who were upset by the new regime. As a parent of a Tarheel swim/dive team member, I would welcome the contract but only if it was going to be enforced. Based on the original reason for this thread I think there might be a few "glitches" to work out in terms of enforcement....
Good point about discrimination when it comes to "stars" punishment. If a coach is not willing to enforce the rules equitably among everyone on the team, then the rules are a joke. That goes for any team, any sport....
