Navy is a much better team than Air Force even though they swim in a slow conference. Michigan and Minnesota are still great schools even though it gets cold there, but shouldn't be a problem if you are manly enough. Based on the campus/college town alone Harvard over Princeton any day. UVa if you want to imagine that you go to an Ivy league school, and any school besides Auburn if you want to make money after you graduate/done swimming.

I've read some really f***ing stupid, ignorant, toolish posts on this message board, but this one wins the blue ribbon.

I have no connection to Auburn in any way. I have never even been to Alabama. To say this about an entire university and their community is pathetic. I hope you were joking......

As an unabashed Auburn fan I thought I'd take the time to post in response to Aqualung's previous post.

I've read plenty on these forums, and of course much of what I have read over the last year has been in regards Auburn. Like any school, Auburn has its supporters and its detractors -- all of which is part of the game. After all, this is just a message board.

Still, it irks me when people talk about Auburn's academics in an indirect way. To me, it's simply ignorance and jealousy coming through an anonymous, typewritten mouthpiece. Generally I consider the knocks against Auburn to be written by a person who has something to gain by making Auburn look bad -- gutless and insecure acts to say the least.

I'd like to pose a few questions: In our civil community, what type of person do we hold in high esteem? Must we go to a certain school to be a part of the academic community? Are only Ivy League students "smart", while all other students are morons? Where do we draw the line between those who are considered intelligent and those who are considered unintelligent? Who/What is the the person/thing which determines our intellect?

If history has shown us anything, it's that civil and academic progress is made by all sorts of people; great thinkers have come from all walks of life, and all areas of the globe. There are brilliant people who attend Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Duke. Likewise, there are brilliant people who attend UNLV, Washington State, Maine, and yes -- even Auburn.

The ignorant among us will think in a close-minded way -- grouping small parts of our world in certain ways. They may say things like "ALL Brown University Students are smart -- and will make six figure salaries"....and, as well: "ALL Florida Atlantic Students are dumb and may not ever get a job upon graduation." When a person or community 'groups' other people or communities in this sort of way, it shows one's own lack of real-life intelligence -- because black and white statements, in most cases, simply are not correct!

Or world is chock-full of differences. Humans think in different patterns of thought, and because of this fact we all bring our differences to the table -- and thankfully so! I couldn't imagine a world where we all were the same: thinking the same things, knowing the same things, seeing the same things, hearing the same things.

There's just too much going in this world for one person to think he or she is better than someone else because of something so trivial as an undergraduate college degree!

Prove me wrong. Give me statistics/data and then I will consider what you are saying. My statement is only as true for the amount it irks you.

As an unbiased third party, i don't think he talked about Auburn's academics in an indirect way. Pretty sure that was clearly a direct insult to Auburn and the intelligence (or lack there of) of its graduates.

Take a look at this website http://www.payscale.com/best-colleges/t ... istics.asp. It gives a very basic measure of the type of salary a graduate may expect to make after graduating from certain universities.

Of the top swimming schools, Stanford, Cal, UVA, and Michigan graduates tend to make the most money by this website's measure.

However, those graduating from Texas, Auburn, Florida, Arizona, and Tennessee seem to do just fine as far as making money goes.

I would say that it's quite misleading to say that a student-athlete should go anywhere, but Auburn if he or she wants to "make money" after his or her swimming career.

In fact, if you take cost of living into account, the median Auburn graduate living somewhere in Alabama (similarly, the median UT grad living in Austin) would probably be able to live quite a bit more comfortably than the median graduate of Cal or Stanford living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

If making money is your life goal, you've already settled for mediocrity.

I don't think that the size of someone's paycheck determines whether or not they have settled for mediocrity. What is mediocrity, anyway? Does it just mean making a mediocre income? Does it mean having talent and ability that goes unused? There are tons of people that make somewhere around the median income, but live far better than mediocre lives. By getting a college degree, college graduates are already above mediocre in that regard.

If you do want to measure by paycheck, then again, earning $120,000 per year while living in the Bay Area or New York probably equates to earning around $65,000 per year while living in a city like Austin or somewhere in Alabama. If you look at it that way, a college graduate is more likely to "settle for mediocrity" coming from a top school in an expensive city than from a place like Auburn (assuming a lot of students stay in the general area after graduation).

Looking back, it also looks like you would recommend " any school besides Auburn if you want to make money" upon graduation or after finishing competitive swimming. I'm guessing you were exaggerating, but since you did, it makes it really difficult to determine the actual meaning of that statement. Literally, the data shows that Auburn grads in general make more money than about 70% of other colleges in the http://www.payscale.com survey. Would you recommend those other schools over Auburn?

I think that Aqualung has given proof that he or she is a jackass.

Money is nice, but it ain't everything. I'd rather be happy and enjoy what I do for a living than be rich and hate what I do.
