Carthage Names DeLaRosby Women's Coach, Adds Assistants

Carthage College athletic director Robert Bonn has named Beth DeLaRosby head women’s swimming coach.  DeLaRosby replaces Sue Nutty, who resigned to pursue other interests.  Bonn also named Tom Carroll head women’s water polo coach, replacing Luke Payette, who resigned in June, and Guy Gniotczynski a graduate assistant swimming coach.  Additionally, Carroll will assist with men's and women's swimming.

“We’re very excited about Beth and Tom taking over the swimming and water polo programs,” said Bonn.  “They will bring great enthusiasm and coaching expertise to the teams.”

DeLaRosby takes over a program that finished 26th at the NCAA Championships and second at the CCIW Conference Championship. With only eight separate programs in Division III, DeLaRosby also becomes one of the few women's team coaches in the country.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” said DeLaRosby.  “Carthage has a well-established program and sent a number of swimmers to last year’s NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming Championship.  I’m excited about the chance to contribute to that kind of success.  I’m also happy to be back in the Midwest after a few years on the East Coast.“

A native of Two Harbors, Minn., DeLaRosby was an assistant swimming coach at Springfield College in 2006-07 and 2007-08.  Prior to that, she served as an assistant coach at Wheaton College (Mass.) in 2005-06.  DeLaRosby attended Gustavus Adolphus College, where she earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America first-team All-America honors in both 2004 and 2005, placing third in the 50-freestyle in 2004 and tying for sixth place in the same event in 2005.  She graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s in psychology and criminal justice and received her master’s in physical education from Springfield in 2008.

"I really didn’t know much about Beth, but several - Jon Carlson, Pete Casares, John Taffe - spoke exceptionally well of her," said Carthage men's coach Greg Earhart. "At Springfield, her sprinters actually knocked our 200 and 400 freestyle relays out of NCAA’s, so we’re glad to have her on our side. She is someone who can make both programs – women and men – better. "

Carroll, a native of Elmhurst, Ill., was the head water polo coach for the Blue Devil Swim Club in Gurnee, Ill., from 2006 to 2007, as well as a part-time assistant swimming coach at Carthage for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.  Carroll was the water polo coach at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.,  and has extensive high school and collegiate water polo playing experience.

“Tom has actually been working with Carthage for the past two seasons," said Earhart.  "We’re glad he turned down a couple of positions to come back and direct our polo program.  He was a no-nonsense competitor and probably one of the hardest working and most disciplined people I’ve been fortunate to work with.”

Gniotczynski, a native of Thiensville, Wis., is an assistant coach at the YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis.  He served as the coach for the combined St. Francis/Thomas More High School girl’s swimming team in Milwaukee, Wis., from 2003 to 2007.  Gniotczynski graduated from Carroll College (Wis.) in 2003 with a bachelor’s in biochemistry.

“We’re really fortunate to have a graduate assistant who can come in right away and make an impact.  Guy has incredible energy, and an incredible understanding of race analysis from working with the Parametrix system.  I’m looking forward to learning things from him.”
