Blue Devils Fall At Clemson To End Regular Season

Clemson, S.C. , February 2nd, 2008

The Duke swimming and diving teams closed out the regular season with a pair of losses to Clemson on Saturday afternoon, as the Blue Devil women dropped a 162.5-133.5 decision to the Lady Tigers and the Duke men fell to the Clemson men’s squad by a score of 156-116.

On the women’s side, freshman Ashley Twichell was a double-winner, as she picked up yet a first place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 9:59.39, and then touched in 4:57.54 in the 500 free to take top honors.

Sophomore Shannon Beall also recorded two wins on the day, as she finished the 200 fly race in 2:03.42 and touched in 56.16 seconds for a top finish in the 100 fly.

Classmate Meredith Bannon touched in a career-best 2:20.09 in the 200 breast to take top honors, while senior Danielle Spearman also secured a victory with a top finish in the 100 back (58.02 seconds). Spearman also took second place in the 200 back (2:06.36).

On the diving board, sophomore Julie Brummond took first on the 1-meter springboard with a tally of 266.18 and then placed second on the 3-meter board with a mark of 267.23.

On the men’s side, freshman Eric Ness took first place in the 200 fly, touching in 1:55.43.

The Duke men closed the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay, as the foursome of freshman Andy Osterland, sophomores Sean Smith and David Hahn and senior Ryan Packer finished in 3:10.98.
