Northern Arizona Beats New Mexico, Loses to BYU
Albuquerque, N.M. , November 1st, 2008
The Northern Arizona women’s swimming and diving team came away with a win and a loss after a double-dual meet at New Mexico on Saturday morning. The Lumberjacks beat the Lobos of New Mexico by a score of 177-123, but lost to BYU, 177.5-122.5. NAU is now 4-4 overall this season in dual meet competition.
"BYU is a really good team," said NAU head coach Andy Johns. "But we had a good day and had some nice swims in some areas. Beating BYU in the medley relay was great. Our breaststrokers, especially T.J. Williams, were big for us. Kimber Morelli in the 200 fly, Kate Schafer in the 500 free, Claire Ferro in the 200 free, Rachael Foe in the 100 fly and Taryn Harris on both diving events, all did really well today."
The Lumberjacks' 200 medley relay team of Meredith Egloria, T.J. Williams, Renee Rother and Tami Binek beat out both BYU and New Mexico with a time of 1:46.31, starting off the meet on a good note for NAU.
NAU won three of 16 events against BYU, with two of those wins coming individually by Williams in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Combined with her breaststroke swim in the medley relay, she won all her events for the day.
In addition to the medley relay and the two breaststroke events, the Lumberjacks were victorious in seven other events against New Mexico. Harris, a sophomore diver, beat the Lobos on both the 1-meter and the 3-meter.
Ferro took first against New Mexico in the 200 freestyle, Morelli was third overall and first against the Lobos in the 200 butterfly, Schafer took second only to BYU in the 500 freestyle, Foe did the same in the 100 fly and NAU's 400 freestyle relay team of Egloria, Binek, Ferro and Foe was second only to BYU.
NAU's depth in the breaststroke was impressive as Maria Hechanova and Jessi Jones took second and third overall in the 100, giving NAU the 1-2-3 sweep, and Jones and Hechanova then took third and fourth, respectively, in the 200.
The Lumberjacks will continue competition on the road in two weeks when they travel to Idaho for a dual meet at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.
