The Washington University men’s swimming team won the University of Chicago Maroon Invitational, held Friday-Saturday, Nov. 7-8, in Chicago, Ill. The Chicago women topped foru school records en route to a win on the women's side.
Chicago set records in four relays: the 200-yard medley (1:52.28), 200-yard freestyle (1:42.21), 400 freestyle (3:42.90), and 800 freestyle (8:01.29).
Freshman Tara Levens (Palo Alto, Calif./ Gunn), who set a school record en route to winning the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.01), competed on the Maroons' 200-yard medley, and 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. She also took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.85).
Sophomore Ellie Elgamal (San Diego, Calif./ Bishop's School) participated on all four record-setting relays in addition to leading the way in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly (58.74, 2:13.70).
Freshman Laura Biery (St. Paul, Minn./ Central) placed first in the 400-yard individual medley (4:45.34) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.32) and was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman Jacqueline Trudeau (Brecksville, Ohio/ Magnificat) was a part of three record-setting relay teams (200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle), while freshmen Megan St. John (Riverside, Ill./ Riverside Brookfield) (400- and 800-yard freestyle) and Casey Cappozzoli (Reisterstown, Md./ Notre Dame Prep) (200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle) competed on two of the relays. St. John also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.39).
Junior Alex Beyer won three individual events and was a member of four first-place relay teams at the Maroon Invitational. His best time of the meet came in the 400-yard IM, which he won in 4:07.52, eclipsing the NCAA “B” qualifying standard and becoming the first Bear to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships this year.
He also won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.29) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.40), missing the provisional standard in the 200-free by just 0.55 seconds. Beyer teamed with freshman Billy Griffits, senior Julian Beattie and sophomore David Chao in the 400-medley relay (3:34.97), Chao, sophomore Kartik Anjur and junior Brian Kushner in the 800-free relay (7:03.55) and senior Kevin Leckey, junior Dan Arteaga and Chao in the 400-free relay (3:09.40). He also won the 200-medley relay (1:38.50) with Leckey, Arteaga and Chao.
