DENTON, Texas (SMU)-SMU women's swimming and diving (4-1-1) matched up against Arkansas, Colorado State, and North Texas in the Mean Green Duals held Saturday in Pohl Recreation Center, where they went 3-1, with the loss coming to Arkansas in which the Razorbacks narrowly edged out the Mustangs 152-148. In competition, the Mustangs took home nine first place finishes out of 16 events.
SMU started the meet well and ended strong with first place finishes in both relay events. To start off the meet, the Mustangs touched in ahead of Arkansas by eight-tenths of a second with a time of 1:46.18, and easily won the 200 free relay a full three seconds ahead of the second place Razorbacks at 1:34.78.
Senior Candace Blackman dominated in the free events in which she swam, touching in first in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free. Blackman touched in at 51.19 in the 100 free, while sophomore Elzanne Werth was less than a second behind with a time of 52.17 for second place.
In the back events, Senior Petra Klosova handled the competition well, earning two top finishes in the 100 and 200 back. Klosova took out Arkansas' Breann Fuller in the 100 back by seven-tenths of a second clocking in at 57.18.
Sophomore diver Audra Egenolf won the three-meter springboard event with a score of 296.45, while placing second in the one-meter event. In the 100 and 200 breast events, junior Devon Callaghan finished third, followed by a second place finish in the 200 IM.
Sophomore Mustang Denisa Smolenova had a close victory over teammate Werth in the 100 fly, finishing first two-tenths of a second better that Werth with a time of 56.42. Smolenova also competed in the 200 fly in which she touched in third.
The Mustangs' next competition is in College Station, Texas at the Texas A&M Invitational on November 21, 2008.
