University of Bridgeport Women Swim Past Queens College 123.5-93.5

The University of Bridgeport women’s swimming team opened its 2008-09 dual meet schedule at home on Friday afternoon, and the Purple Knights defeated the Queens (NY) College Knights, 123.5-93.5. The win by UB also gave head coach Brad Flood (fifth season at Bridgeport) his 100th career dual meet victory. Flood notched 49 dual meet men’s wins and 35 dual meet women’s wins during a six-year tenure as head coach at Central Connecticut State University, and Friday’s victory is dual meet win 16 at UB.

As a team, the Purple Knights won eight individual events on Friday. Freshmen Patrycja Zera (Zabki, Poland) and Sandra Schmitz (Bruhl, Germany) each won two events on Friday. Zera won the 800 Free (9:44.66) and the 100 Back (1:10.94), and Schmitz captured the 200 Free (2:14.83) and the 400 Free (4:46.83).

 

Other individual winner for the Purple Knights were junior Alena Gorlanova (Omsk, Russia) in the 500 Free (30.37), junior Gorana Goranic (Belgrade, Serbia) in the 200 IM, sophomore Roxana Purcelea (Constanta, Romania) in the 100 Butterfly (1:09.06), and junior Marina Konta (Split, Croatia) in the 100 Free (1:06.73).

 

The 200 Medley Relay team of Konta, Gorlanova, Viki Proskurina (JR, Omsk, Russia) and Doris Matosic (JR, Split, Croatia) won their event in a time of 2:16.42.

 

The UB swimming team returns to the pool on Friday, November 14th at Manhattan College. Also participating in the meet at Manhattan will be Baruch and St. Joseph’s Colleges.
