Bridgeport Men Get First Win

The University of Bridgeport men’s swimming team made history on Friday afternoon by winning the opening dual meet in the program’s history, as the Purple Knights defeated the Queens College Knights, 120-110, in Flushing, NY. The Purple Knight women posted a similar 131-112 road dual meet.

Leading the way for UB were triple winners sophomore Anna Kwiatkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and senior Alena Gorlanova (Omsk, Russia).

Kwiatkowska won the 200-yard Freestyle (2:02.95), the 200-yard Butterfly (2:18.58) and the 100-yard Butterfly (1:02.36).

Gorlanova won the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:11.11), the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:34.39) and the 200-yard IM (2:24.87).

Double winners for the Purple Knights on Friday were sophomore Sandra Schmitz (Breuhl, Germany) who won the 100-yard Backstroke (1:02.56) and 200-yard Backstroke (2:15.06) plus junior Roxana Purcelea who took first place in the 50-yard Freestyle (25.94) and 100-yard Freestyle (56.91).

Highlighting the first dual meet in UB men’s swimming history were the strong performances turned in by sophomore Piotr Safronczyk (Bialystok, Poland) and freshman Eddie Phillips (Missouri City, TX), who each won three events.
 
Safronczyk won the 100-yard Breaststroke (58.08), the 200-yard Breaststroke (2:14.91) and the 200-yard IM (2:00.10). His time in the 100 Breast is an NCAA “B” qualifying mark.
 
Phillips took first in the 1000-yard Freestyle (10:49.50), the 100-yard Freestyle (51.00) and the 100-yard Butterfly (54.79).
 
Freshman Toni Valcic (Ribnica, Slovenia) and junior Nikola Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) were double event winners on Friday, as Valcic captured the 200-yard Freestyle (1:51.44) and 50-yard Freestyle (22.67) and Savic won the 100-yard Backstroke (56.03) and 200-yard Backstroke (2:05.92).
 
After an intra-squad meet next Saturday, Bridgeport will return to dual meet action at home on Saturday, November 14th against Post University. Action will get underway in the Wheeler Recreation Center Natatorium at 1:00 p.m.
