North Texas Falls to SMU

DALLAS, Texas , November 6th, 2009
North Texas Swimming & Diving fell to Southern Methodist in its dual meet 143-96 Friday evening.

North Texas managed to capture only two events from SMU, a perennial national powerhouse.

“I am really pleased with the way we competed with SMU tonight,” head coach Joe Dykstra said. “That is a top 15 team and we didn't back down one bit, taking out races aggressively and losing quite a few races by less than a quarter second. We had a lot of season best times tonight, and while we still made a lot of mistakes on some technical skills, I think we are showing a lot of progress from a couple weeks ago.”

The Mean Green relay teams in the 200 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley managed to capture first place finishes besting their time from the North Texas Relays by 1.37 seconds with a 1:37.13.

The North Texas diving team also had one of its best days of the young season, but was overpowered by the strong SMU team. Delia Covo set her personal best score on the one meter board with a 240.75.  That score was good enough for fourth best in North Texas history behind Melissa Whitaker’s 256.50.

“Our divers also did a great job tonight and re showing a lot of positive improvement from week to week,” Dykstra said. “Now the coaches are excited to see the other half of the team compete tomorrow afternoon up in Sherman.”

The other half of the team will compete Saturday afternoon in Sherman, Texas, in a double-dual against Austin College and Southwestern at 1 p.m.
