LOS ANGELES , November 6th, 2009

Air Force:

Led by senior Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.), the Air Force men’s and women’s diving teams completed the first day of competition at the Trojan Diving Invitational, hosted by USC. Friday’s events included the men’s 1-meter dive, the women’s 3-meter dive and both the men’s and women’s platform events.

Van Valkenburg was the Falcons’ top performer in both men’s events, placing fifth on the platform, while just missing out on the finals of the 1-meter competition, finishing ninth overall. The two-time defending Mountain West champion on the platform, Van Valkenburg scored a 280.05 in the event. Meanwhile, he notched a score of 262.75 on the 1-meter board, less than seven points away from advancing to the finals.

Also competing for the Air Force men were David Arlington (Sr., Eagle River, Alaska), Cheyne Clark (So., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Beau Riebe (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash.). Arlington registered an 11th place finish on the 1-meter board with a score of 241.00, while coming in ninth on the platform with a mark of 227.75. Clark placed seventh on the platform with a score of 235.60, while scoring 196.95 to take 16th-place on the 1-meter board. Meanwhile, Riebe finished 10th on the platform and 13th at 1-meter and with scores of 198.65 and 219.60, respectively.

Senior Chelsea Tompkins (Grand Junction, Colo.) was the lone Air Force diver on the women’s side, finishing fifth on the platform and 14th on the 3-meter board. An all-conference performer on the platform last season, Tompkins scored a 179.75 in the event, while finishing with a mark of 192.20 at 3-meters.

California:

California freshman Kelsey Heiken finished eighth in the
three-meter springboard final on Friday morning at the Trojan Diving
Invitational at the USC McDonald’s Swim Stadium. The Golden Bears
newcomer, who won the three-meter springboard in Cal’s dual-meet win over
Fresno State on Nov. 5 in Berkeley, posted a score of 251.00 in the final
at USC.

“As a freshman, just coming out the gate, having back-to-back good
performances on three-meter springboard is a great accomplishment,” Cal
diving coach Ben Herdt said. “For Kelsey to go top eight here, with only
Arizona and Arizona State not represented here out of the Pac-10 schools
that have diving, is amazing. She’s gaining neat experience through the
Fresno State meet to today.

"I’m excited to see how she does on one-meter tomorrow. It’ll be her first
college competition on one-meter springboard, because she sat that out
against Fresno State.”

USC’s Victoria Ishimatsu won the three-meter title (344.00) in her home pool.

Heiken also placed eighth in the three-meter preliminary round with a
score of 243.05. Cal freshman Rachel Becker was 15th in the prelim with a
score of 181.70.

The two freshmen are the only Cal women competing at the meet. Neither
competed in the afternoon platform competition.

The meet concludes on Saturday, Nov. 7 with the one-meter springboard.
One-meter prelims are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the final slated
to start at 11:15 a.m.

At USC, Eichenseer finished second to USC's Harrison Jones in the men's platform with a score of 341.75, to Jones' 350.00 leading tally. Jones, a three-time All-American as a freshman at the NCAAs, won last year's Pac-10 platform championship.
