The UNLV men's swimming and diving team split a tri-meet this afternoon at Arizona, falling to the Wildcats while posting a victory over Wisconsin, though the Rebel women squad would suffer losses to both opponents as the three schools competed on Friday afternoon.
In the men's competition, Arizona topped UNLV (3-1) 161-191, while the Rebels won their meet against Wisconsin 182-110. Once again distance swimmer Kier Maitland paced the Rebel efforts, as he led a 1-2 finish in the 1000 free, winning in a time of 9:13.92. Teammate John Mendoza was second in 9:29.81. Maitland also won the 500 free in 4:28.63, and was again followed by Mendoza in second (4:38.22).
Other Rebels to win individual events on the day were Kyle Virva in the 200 free (1:41.01) and freshman Cody Roberts in the 100 fly (49.47). The Rebels' 200 free relay squad of Thomas Andolfsson, Charlie Tapp, Steven Nelms, and Virva also would place first, touching the wall in 1:22.25.
The UNLV women (0-4) were handed setbacks by scores of 238-60 by Arizona and 203.5-96.5 by Wisconsin. Highlights for the Rebels included three top-four finishes freshman Brittany Ozar, as she placed second in the 200 free (1:51.37), third in the 400 free (5:01.10), and fourth in the 200 IM (2:07.61). Ana Dangalakova also had three top-four finishes on the afternoon (3rd in the 200 IM-2:07.61, 4th in the 200 fly-2:07.60, 4th in the 200 back-2:04.70). Freshman Andree Anne Genereux also shined with a third-place swim in the 50 free (24.24) and a fourth-place time of 52.41 in the 100 free,
UNLV remains in the state of Arizona to take on Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday at 1 pm.
Maggie Meyer remained unbeaten on the season by grabbing a pair of individual wins Friday, as the Wisconsin’s women’s swimming and diving team split a pair of dual meets at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The Badgers downed UNLV by a score of 203.50-96.50 in the teams’ first-ever meeting, but UW fell to host Arizona for the ninth-consecutive season by a 178-122 margin.
Meyer swept the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events to remain unbeaten in 10 individual races this season and recorded her fifth NCAA championships qualifying mark of the year in the 100 back.
Those were two of the eight event wins UW claimed on the day, with junior Ciara Rinaudo also posting a sweep of the springboard diving events. Rinaudo, a Phoenix native competing in her home state, tallied a score of 261.05 to claim victory in the 1-meter competition and then posted a score of 293.85 to score the win on the 3-meter board.
Meyer’s win in the 100 back came in a time of 54.41, as she edged out Arizona’s Ana Agy. Her winning mark of 1:59.50 in the 200 back was her first of the season in a backstroke event to not meet the NCAA consideration cut.
Redshirt freshman Monika Stitski led a sweep of the top two spots in the 500 freestyle for the Badgers, as she claimed the win in an impressive NCAA qualifying time of 4:44.83 – UW’s top time in the event this year. Sophomore Danielle Beckwith was just behind in second place with a time of 5:00.09.
In the 50 free, sophomore Beckie Thompson claimed victory for UW for a second-consecutive week by clocking a time of 23.68 to distance herself from a tightly-grouped pack.
Junior Ashley Wanland also was an individual event winner for the Badgers, as she claimed the 200 breaststroke in an NCAA-qualifying time of 2:14.89. Earlier, Wanland was edged out by just .05 seconds and took second place to Arizona’s Annie Chandler in the 100 breast, clocking a time of 1:02.36.
The Badgers also scored a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the quartet of Thompson, Meyer, senior Rosie Morahan and freshman Laura Miller clocking in at 1:34.01 to win by more than a second over Arizona’s top entry.
In the 200 medley relay, the Badgers clocked an NCAA championships qualifying time of 1:42.21, a mark good enough for second behind Arizona’s ‘A’ squad.
The Badgers (3-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) return to conference action next Friday with a 5 p.m. dual meet against Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
Arizona and UNLV proved to be tenacious competition for the Wisconsin men’s swimming and diving team, as the Badgers fell to both the Wildcats and the Rebels in a pair of dual meets Friday in Tucson, Ariz.
Despite a rocky start at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, the Badgers finished the meet on a positive note, taking second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind UNLV’s squad. Andrews, Phil Davies, Wes Lagerhausen and Chris Nemeth put a cap on the meet with the runner-up finish, clocking in at 1:25.77.
Senior Derrick O’Donnell had the Badgers’ only win in the desert, swimming the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.15 to take the victory ahead of teammate and fellow senior Eric Johnson, who was third in a time of 2:03.74.
Caleb Percevecz, Chuck Allison and Brett Nagle also had impressive individual performances and helped the Badgers stay above water during their first competition away from the UW Natatorium this season.
Percevecz was runner up to Arizona’s Ben Grado in both diving events of the evening, tallying 321.60 points in the 1-meter competition and 344.60 on the 3-meter board.
Nagle competed well individually, grabbing fourth place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:57.20 and taking third the 500 free, with a time of 4:43.13.
Allison claimed a fifth-place finish behind Nagle in the 200 fly, clocking a time of 1:57.22, and then was third in the 100 fly at 51.61.
Teammate Conner Andrews followed Allison in the 100 fly, clocking a 52.77 for a fourth-place finish.
Next on deck for Wisconsin is a matchup against Big Ten rival Northwestern. The Badgers will journey to Evanston, Ill., to battle Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m.
