Stanford Sweeps Top Swimmer Awards

Multiple
NCAA "A" qualifying times and a school record for Julia Smit (Stanford
University) and Multiple NCAA "B" time for Austin Staab (Stanford
University) earned them the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate
Swimmer-of-the-Week Honors. Also earning the award were Meghan Donahue
(University of Indianapolis), Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Wayne State
University), Sarah Crockett (University of Mary Washington) and Michael
Mpitsos (Kenyon College). The six won the award based on their
performances for the week of November 16-22.
Division I Women
Julia Smit, Stanford University
Smit (Mt. Sinai, New York)
had three wins to help her team win the Toshiba Cup. The senior won
the 200 backstroke (1:52.83, NCAA "A" time and school record), the 400
individual medley (4:03.31, NCAA "A" time) and the 200 individual
medley (1:58.34, NCAA "A" time). The All-American also swam on the
winning 200 freestyle relay (1:29.22), the winning 400 freestyle relay
(3:17.28) and the winning 800 freestyle relay (7:08.70).
Division I Men
Austin Staab, Stanford University
Staab (Westerville, Ohio)
had three wins to help his team win the Toshiba Cup. The junior won
the 100 butterfly (46.31), the 100 freestyle (43.93, NCAA "B" time) and
the 50 freestyle (19.95 NCAA "B" time). The All-American also swam on
the winning 200 medley relay (1:28.30, meet record), the winning 800
freestyle relay (6:30.31, NCAA "B" time), the winning 400 medley relay
(3:12.69, NCAA "B" time) and the winning 200 free relay (1:19.74).
Division II Women
Meghan Donahue, University of Indianapolis
Donahue (Milan, MI)
had two wins to help her team to a third place finish at the Patrick
Woehnker Invitational at Wabash College. The sophomore won the 100
backstroke (57.48, NCAA "A" time) and the 200 backstroke (2:04.32, NCAA
"A" time). Donahue also swam on the winning 800 freestyle relay
(7:35.93, NCAA "A" time), 200 medley relay (1:47.98, NCAA "A" time) and
the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.99, NCAA "A" time).
Division II Men
Joaquin Abascal Gallegos, Wayne State University
Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain)
had two wins in top-ranked Wayne State's 164-74 dual meet victory over Calvin College. The
redshirt freshman won the 400 individual medley (4:00.26, NCAA "A"
time), the 100 freestyle (47.38), and swam exhibition in the 100
breaststroke (56.88, NCAA "A" time).
Division III Women
Sarah Crockett , University of Mary Washington
Crockett (Toano, VA)
helped her team to ninth place finish University of Maryland Terrapin
Cup Invitational. The junior swam to a fifteenth place finish in the
500 freestyle (5:00.41, NCAA "B" time), a twenty second place finish
in the 50 freestyle (24.30, NCAA "B" time), a seventh place finish in
the 200 freestyle (1:52.12, NCAA "A" time), an eighteenth place finish
in the 100 backstroke ( 58.80, NCAA "B" time and school record) and a
twelfth place finish in the 100 freestyle (52.32, NCAA "A" time).
Crockett also swam on the eleventh place 400 medley relay (3:58.45,
NCAA "B" time), the eleventh place 200 medley relay (1:48.78, NCAA "B"
time) and the tenth place 800 freestyle relay (7:43.92, NCAA "B" time).
Division III Men 
Michael Mpitsos, Kenyon College
Mpitsos (Newport, OR)
helped the top-ranked Lords to a third-place finish at Northwestern University's
TYR Invitational. The junior swam to a second place finish in the 100
backstroke (50.05, NCAA "A" time), the 200 backstroke (1:49.97, NCAA
"A" time), a fourth place finish in the 50 freestyle (21.52, 21.16 in
preliminaries) and a third place finish in the 50 backstroke (23.44).
The All-American also assisted on the winning 200 medley relay
(1:22.12) and the fourth place 200 medley relay (1:31.65).
