UNC Sweeps Maryland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. , November 6th, 2009

The men and women¹s swimming and diving teams remain
undefeated in the ACC after swimming past the Maryland Terapins Friday
afternoon. The Tar Heels improved their records to 3-0 in the conference.
The UNC men¹s team defeated Maryland 171 - 98 and the women won 166 117

³We put in a hard week of training and we have a few people battling
injuries, but I am very pleased with the win,² said head coach Rich DeSelm.

³Having Tommy Wyher step up and go 48.19 in the 100 back is awesome. Kane
showed she has great talent and is ready to race,² said DeSelm about the two
swimmers who achieved NCAA-B qualifying times.

The Tar Heel men dominated the meet with top performances in 14 out of 15
events, including exhibition swims.

Junior Tommy Wyher led the men to a quick start with a win in the 100-yard
backstroke followed in second by Junior Josh Hafkin and in third, Sophomore
Jim Flannery. Wyher finished with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 48.19.

Senior Jason McLaughlin went a season best time of 50.01 in the 100-yard
butterfly taking first with Freshman Tom Luchsinger in second and Sophomore
Brad Hamilton in third.

The Tar Heels continued to dominate sweeping the 200-yard butterfly. Jason
McLaughlin claimed his second victory of the afternoon followed in second by
Tyler Harris and in third, Robert Grimmett-Norris.

The women also had a successful afternoon having top performances in 9 out
of the 15 events.

The Tar Heel women went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke with Sophomore
Laura Moriarty taking first followed by teammates Layne Brodie and Katie
Keel.  Moriarty also won the 200-yard breaststroke.

³Laura is a great racer and competitor, she doesn¹t like to lose. She was an
NCAA qualifier last year and would like to score this year. She has been
working on the little things to improve her races,² said DeSelm.

The 200-yard freestyle was a close race, but Junior Katura Harvey got her
hand on the wall first with a season best time of 1:50.95 followed by
teammate Ashley Howard.

It was an exciting afternoon for Junior Rebecca Kane who won the 50-yard
freestyle finishing with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 23.00.  Kane also won
the 100-yard freestyle.

The Tar Heel women distance swimmers dominated the 500-yard freestyle going
1-2-3-4. Katura Harvey took first followed by teammates Ashley Miller in
second, Stephanie Eisenring in third and Katelyn Martin in fourth.

The Tar Heel men divers placed 1-2-3 on 1-meter. Senior David Solarz took
first followed by Freshman Jake Kinzbach and Sophomore David MacDonald.  The
men also dominated 3-meter with a first place finish by David Solarz, Ryland
Jones in second and David MacDonald in third.

³Solarz had a great afternoon winning both boards. He is our leading senior
diver. He is a fierce competitor and wants to win,² said head diving coach
Kevin Lawrence.

³We are a young squad, but Solarz has been a great leader for the
underclassmen. It has become a very competitive group of guys,² said
Lawrence.

The Tar Heels will be competing again in Colombia, S.C. in two weeks at the
Gamecock Invitational.
