School Diving Record Highlights UNO Efforts at North Texas

Denton, Texas , October 17th, 2009
The University of New Orleans swimming and diving team dropped a pair of duals on Saturday morning as the women were defeated 177-109 by North Texas and the men fell to SMU 158-140.

A school-record performance by Johnny DeMaine in the 1-meter dive highlighted the efforts by the UNO men (0-2) against a SMU (1-0) program that has won 13 straight Conference USA championships.

In the first opportunity for the Privateer divers this season, DeMaine scored a 268.15 breaking his previous high-water mark of 258.75 against Alabama last November.

The lone multi-event winner for UNO was Jonas Grundstrom in the 500 and 1000 free. Grundstrom started his day with a 9:44.27 in the 1000 free and came back later with a 4:43.09 in the 500 free.

Mark Schindler, Ben Solari and Jonathan Field added wins of their own against the Mustangs.

In the breaststroke events, Schindler won at a distance of 100 meters (1:00.12) with Solari taking the win at 200 (2:07.11). Field's 265.25 in the 3-meter dive rounded out the victories for UNO.

"We swam a great team close today," said head coach Randy Horner. "Our team's experience swimming ranked teams is paying off as we raced hard and took our share of events against a quality top 25 program."

For the UNO women (1-1), Laura Cempel and Haydn Maclean were the big winners against NT (2-0).

The school-record holder in the 1000 free, Cempel improved to 2-0 in the event this year after reaching the wall in a time of 10:30.65. Maclean had two events wins, claiming the 200 back in a time of 2:09.87 with Ashley Aranda placing second with a 2:13.47, before returning to the pool to claim the 200 IM with a 2:11.48.

Melissa Oishi was the other winner for the Privateer women, winning the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.35, besting teammate Claire Barron (1:09.01) for a 1-2 finish.

"Today was a good dose of reality and shows that we have a lot of work to do," said Horner. "We have a young team and with our small numbers, do not have room for errors and still contend in a dual."

"Our team will be able to grow from this loss."

Both teams will return to the Lonestar State on Nov. 6 to begin a two-day dual against Incarnate Word and the Rice women.
