Day Two:
The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team wrapped up their host meet in Gillette, Wyo. with wins over North Dakota and South Dakota for the second consecutive day.
The Cowgirls won by a total of 139-64 over South Dakota and 119-84 against North Dakota. On the men’s side, the Pokes defeated South Dakota 126-71, and 134-65 over North Dakota.
“I want to thank North Dakota and South Dakota for making the trip here,” said UW head coach Tom Johnson. “It was a lot of fun and they were both very competitive today and won some events.”
For the Cowgirls, both the relay teams in the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay came away with wins. Individually, Kristen Flachbarth was the high women finisher in the 1650 freestyle (18:00.03), Stephanie Vint won the 400 IM (4:31.97), and Lesley Young swam to a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.00).
The Cowboys had eight individual champions and both the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Sam Holmes led the way in the 1650 freestyle (16:33.51), Tyler Kybartas was first in the 200 freestyle (1:44.35), Lucas Koenig won the 100 butterfly (53.67), and Christian Johnson in the 100 freestyle (47.43). Other individual winners were Kendrick Bachman in the 400 IM (4:11.16) and Brandon Fischer in the 100 breaststroke (57.06).
On the diving boards, leading the way for the Cowgirls was Stephanie Ortiz on three-meter. Ortiz scored a 289.80 and finished in first. Kyle Bogner won the three-meter spring board yesterday and followed that with another win on one-meter with a score of 304.35.
“Brandon Fischer was a stud today. Even though he didn’t win the IM, he still had a great meet in that event and winning the 100 breast,” Johnson said. “If I had a game ball to give away on the men’s side Fischer would get it today.
“On the women’s side, Stephanie Vint had a great day and I wished I could have swam her in more events. Kristen Flachbarth swam her first mile today and she did great. Overall we need to get tougher. It was a busy weekend with a lot of races, but we will come back and get ready for next weekend.”
The UW swimmers and divers will continue dual meet action next week. Wyoming will travel to Denver, Colo. to take on Denver University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
