The University of Georgia women’s and University of Texas men's swimming and diving teams started out the new year the way the exited 2009 – ranked first in the CSCAA / CollegeSwimming.com Division I Poll.
Following 153-147 loss to Texas the Bulldogs saw their lead in the polls erode, but with voters evenly splitting their first place votes between Arizona and Texas, they were able to hold onto the top spot.
Arizona University remained in second. The Wildcats will have that ranking put to the test this weekend when they travel to both Stanford and California (ranked fourth and fifth respectively). The Longhorns moved ahead of Stanford and into third following their big win.
All controversy could be put to an end when the Longhorns travel to Tucson to take on the Wildcats next week.
On the men's side, the Longhorns captured over three-fourths of the twenty-five first place votes following dual meet wins over fifth-ranked Auburn and twelfth-ranked Georgia. Stanford and Arizona were separated by just three points. The two Pac 10 rivals will get an opportunity to prove who is best when they face off Friday in Tucson, Arizona.
Fifteen teams changed positions in the latest poll. Ninth-ranked Ohio State was the biggest gainer, cracking the top ten for the first time in recent memory. Their 224-74 win over Indiana on January 16th dropped the Hoosiers out of the top twenty. The Buckeyes will have an opportunity to move up further this weekend when they host sixth-ranked Michigan on January 29th.
Forty-four teams garnered votes in the latest poll. Southern Methodist was the only new entrant in the poll. The Mustangs finished third at the January 15-16 SMU Classic.
Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, Inc. (CSCAA), is the oldest coaches association in the United States of America.
