Ranking the Classes (W): #7 Southern Cal

A year after bringing in the number one class in the country, Southern Cal follows it up with another strong class. By some measures, this group could prove even stronger. Last year’s class helped move USC back into the top three at Pac 10’s, but "With the recruits we have coming in next year and the fact that we graduate only a small class," head coach David Salo feels the Trojans, "can challenge for the top spot in 2011."

That’s in large part because they got one of the top signess out there in Casey Carlson. After finishing second to Rebecca Soni at the 2009 World Champ trials, Carlson did what so many breaststrokers do by opting to work with Dave Salo and his rich stable of talent. Carlson’s age and experience could make her the one to beat in two years, and her decision could accelerate her development.

In addition to Carlson, USC added Lynette Lim. Lim is a Singaporean Olympian, by way of Palm Springs and was one of the top distance swimmers available. She will find a terrific training partner in fellow signee Amanda Smith. Smith earned All-American honors as a freshman at is hoping to replicate the success of fellow ex-Hoosier Presley Bard who transferred last year.

Finally IM’ers Megan Hawthorne and Stina Gardell have the potential to impact the big meet in their first season, though won’t have to shoulder the burden themselves. Both will benefit from being able to train alongside Hosszu.
